Longer / Electric Storm

Born To Try

The first concert video is just amazing, she invited someone random to the stage and asked what does he do... a banker he replied. So I guess it sort of aligned with what I was planning to write anyway. Maybe this is a sign or coincidence? It doesn't really going to change what I am doing anyway, if anything - it just reinforced it.

Before I start talking about this new world - I just want to do a quick recap on what went through my mind - there was banking, there was compliance, what challenges that we are facing, upcoming changes in terms of compliances / regulations, potential fixes, possible solutions, what other countries are doing, existing trends, external regulator guidance, end user experiences, pain points, other advisories, approaches, future plannings, latest news.......... They aren't separate topics, but an ecosystem of banking, and as a whole, forms part of the foundation of a stable system. Up to this point, it is still just basics... and I am sure there are enough of news talking about cyber security, scams... all sort of things that we ought to be aware of and perhaps get better at it. And on the technology side, zero trust, bio a lot of different possible solutions were talked about and each has their strengths / weaknesses. It seems even if we put the best people in the world together, a single solution may not exists in this "current environment", or it is just like putting the band aid on and keep patching a leaking hole.

Does it sound familiar? Is it like a war? A never ending war. Where do you draw the line in the sand? Has our past taught us anything?

Building a wall makes it safer right? So we did... then the opposition find a way to breach it. So a stronger wall to be built and keeps repeating. Each time, costing more resources than before cumulatively speaking. If we are lucky, maybe the wall, turns into something else one day. Like a bubble. But the function hasn't changed, the causation is still the same, the opposition is / will get through it one day. So the mouse in the wheel continues to run endlessly. Could the answer be on the other spectrum? Like in ourselves, literally everyone of us. I wonder if a bit of the understanding of the ecosystem and its impact, would help in the long run? How do we feel secure? Is more the better? Or the more to manage / organise becomes the very stress that we want to avoid? It may sound scary, but if we don't face it together, how can we have a chance to make it better? Or even prevent the need of going there in the first place.

For those who remember earlier time, when computer is just a standalone unit, security wasn't the top of the priority, and those potential impacts were something that people can understand generally and/or be visualised aka not a complete rocket science.

The modern day computer, coupled with being "online", with bigger bandwidths, better, faster.... but the funniest thing is - we are also more connected to the digital world and much harder to separate it. I can safely say for myself, I definitely became more "worried", than years before. It isn't my skills per se, it is probably more so of its capabilities, and ended up like a double edge sword. Safety is such a personal thing, and it is not just about the money. It can be privacy, it can be reliability, it can be anything that it helps to make you feel safe. I am sure someone could freak out if their mobile is out of battery and it is real. Someone could experience extreme stress when a phone call couldn't be made. We probably are so connected, because we "trust" that right? So how could it become our worry? It is like we love to trust it, but at the same time, we don't want to trust it. Or do we know when is the time, I need to stop trusting it? I don't have an answer, but if the opportunity comes up, I want to meet some hackers (both black / white) and wonder if they have considered the social impact to other human beings. There could be a fine line, between a prank vs actual abuse and beyond.

Losing your life saving is a traumatic event, and no one wants to go through it, no matter what the reason is, especially if it was done in a way that is no recourse. Even if it could be potentially recovered or reimbursed, I am sure there will be many of sleepless nights that can drive people insane. And don't forget the aftermath when someone actually have gone through that journey. Their trust level could be very different from that point onwards. That is not the scariest point. It is the reaction itself, the justice. Would that person seek revenge? Or ending up accepting it, ask assistance, or maybe even total shutdown and not to deal with it. Whatever it may be, seems like none of the option is good. It is something no one wants to go through. I wonder is it because we have enough people went through that sort of things, and therefore, ended up with the current trend / society? Hackers are nothing new, but the increasing of cyber security risks are. Is this a cultural shift? Did we accept that form of things are ok? Does it mean justice is being served outside of the legal system now? Are we using technology in a form of war / damaging tool (even during our day to day lives), eg. spreading extreme hate online? ?????????

When it comes to safety, I guess "safe" pops into my mind. It has a lock, maybe a dial, strengthen, so people don't get access to it easily. So far so good. I guess that's why an apartment has a door etc. When someone lost the key, a call to the locksmith can probably provide some relief, the worst case scenario, a call to the fire department could probably do the trick. What do you think if it is translated into the modern digital world? What happen when someone experienced accident and lost their memory? There might still be a chance to recover some important data if the device is there.... what if the device isn't? What other way is available? Is this scenario real? How about for elderly? Like in the old times, someone may have physical photo somewhere, something physical as part of the inheritance. Something that they want to pass it on when they are gone. Something for the future generations to remind them of. There may be a chance to do so, if they had the time and knowledge, or someone there to guide them. But what if they left the world prematurely? The tech company can help and provide that sort of function to assist. But ultimately, it relies on the user to make it effective. Some may say sharing password, ok but it goes against the safety anyway. With biometric, is it something you want to share? as is or a variation? Asking someone else to provide that may be an issue. It can also lead to other issues down the track, it really depends on the level of security required...and then we are back to square one again... is the current world pushing us to the other side, the more security is required, more and more and more? If it is the case, I think we are already in a problem. Is there a way that we no longer need to feel unsafe with less security? Seems to be hard, but if it could be achieved, the resources could then be used to deliver something better for everyone....
