In my life - I think I've been told about "changing"... while I think changes are generally good, there are other areas in my life, the resulting effect just ends up with no change. E.g. It isn't that I haven't considered what others have said, I too have analysed various feedback and then balancing it with what I know, what I believe in, filtering external input with logics / understandings etc.... and the end result just ended up with no change, like to continue with my way for certain things. Quite often, it is not an extreme kind of things - like there would be many like minded people confirming such decision, but equally there might be many out there that could opposing it.
Thinking our society today - I wonder which voice, is louder. Is it the one with the majority? But having a majority, does not automatically makes it right.... Just like Wright Brothers - who experienced failures / falls many many times, heaps of people wouldn't believe them - I wonder how many people would have said they were "wrong", and should change - like stop dreaming etc....
If they did give up, will we still have today's aviation achievements? Even if it can be achieved in a later years, the setback, the publicity would probably create a big backlog otherwise or killed / canned the idea altogether. Once it was perceived as wrong, it is much harder for someone to jump in and to prove it otherwise... let alone the likelihood of someone trying that, would be lessen... Oh, I also can think of many may even became the advocate of the opposite side, and start telling others or to teach those venture the other sides the "correct way" of doing things....even if it was coming from a good intention per se, it may not be the good decision in hindsight.... who knows... only time would tell.
PS: I honestly thought that my time was up at post 247. I guess I have changed, at least I'm able to add in 248.... never say never perhaps.
