The Cathedrals Of Broadway Florine Stettheimer

Christian Tang

A picture says a thousand words - and perhaps this one did capture my attention in a heartbeat. In simple term, I get a glimpse of 1929 at 10:09pm. I see Rialto which opens on April 21, 1916, I see Roxy...a lot more. I see resemblances of people I love, in here.

Perhaps even during the worst moment of my life (The Great Depression) and I am sure I can go on and on about it. I wonder if I show it to my close friend, what will they think?

Speaking of society / class - I think people have commented money = evil, which I do not believe it is the case. I guess money is no different to fire, or any tools, if you want to use it for evil, it can be, just like anything else. But was there ever a good side, with the society gap? This is actually an interesting topic to me, I couldn't imagine a world without the rich to be honest, even evils can do good believe it or not. When it is explained through time, it often gives a different perspective. Just like any innovations, the initial investment outlay, can be quite significant, can you imagine how a business is going to run, if too many voices are there at the CEO level. But it doesn't end there, the product cycle itself (in simple term), usually is initial product (first original) - higher cost, then refinement and new entrants in terms of competitions, which may be in a form of replica / less premium models that the general public can enjoy. Pretty much like iPhones, the differentiation between 15 and 14 are very limited, and even people who are in the lower social structure can enjoy a 12/13 (through time), which is still a "smartphone" and isn't too far behind from a technology standpoint.

So even in great depression period, some get to enjoy some fun. You may say they are extravagant but if they were throwing money away, I think the great depression would be the greatest depression instead, with less job, even less spending, less circulation of money, and perhaps more importantly, less hope. If the riches can't even live, what hope is there for others? Those riches may be evil, some may be good, but collectively, I am sure it is about striking the equilibrium, which then translates into a better stability to the society as a whole. That's why I think disruption is better be prevented, a more sustainable pace of changes usually yield a better result if time permits (but then, is this a wishful thinking for current time?)
